Classic French Toast Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4):

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup whole milk (or cream for extra richness)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of bread (preferably thick-cut or day-old)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)

 

Optional Toppings:

  • Maple syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Fresh fruit (berries, bananas, etc.)
  • Whipped cream

 

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a shallow bowl or large dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  2. Dip the Bread:
    • Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a bit of butter.
    • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are well-coated but not overly soggy.
  3. Cook the French Toast:
    • Place the dipped bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crisp.
    • Add more butter to the skillet as needed for additional batches.
  4. Serve:
    • Plate the French toast and top with your favorite toppings, like maple syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

 

Tips for Perfect French Toast:

  • Use slightly stale bread—it absorbs the batter without falling apart.
  • Brioche, challah, or sourdough bread works wonderfully for a rich texture and flavor.
  • Cook on medium heat to avoid burning while ensuring the inside is cooked through.
